The year is 19XX. The kind of 19XX that has typewriters and fog and drinking in the office. Hero is off working on a secret case, you have been given the role of substitute detective. His detective agency isn't very popular, so you spend most of your time just sitting around and chatting with Basil, your assistant. Until one day, a routine case turns out to be more serious than anyone could have imagined. With Hero nowhere to be found, it's up to you to solve it.

Detective Sunny and the Flower Boy's Knife is a noir comedy mystery, with all the crime, corruption, plot twists and stupid jokes that implies. This is pretty silly stuff.

This is based on Omori, but doesn't really require knowledge of that game, except in a few parts. If you know who Sunny and Omori are, you're pretty much good. Detective Sunny does reference plot points from Omori, so if you're planning on playing that blind I'd suggest you do so first.

Enjoy!

Hold up, I'm pretty sure there was a game that was exactly like this but a text adventure that I found linked on ao3.

That's correct!

https://archiveofourown.org/works/39132912/

I reworked my text adventure into this visual novel, with a few rewrites here and there, but it's mostly the same with a few added jokes. And uh, sorry for taking a month to reply, I've not really checked on the comments in a while.

(+1)

Wait wait wait he thought he would die HOW?! The games good I got a couple of endings but how many endings are there? I wish there were a guide maybe I'll make my own guide.

(+2)

There aaare 12 endings, I think, after a quick ctrl+f through the game script! So, really, 11 failure states and 1 proper ending where X is defeated and everything works out.
Anyway, I'm glad you liked the game! I wish Ren'Py had some easy way to make flowcharts of the possible options, which would work as a guide, I'd make one in a heartbeat! But it doesn't, and the third-party solutions don't seem to work either.

!SPOILERS AHEAD!

As for your first question, I'm not sure what you're referring to! If you're wondering why Sunny thought X would die when Sunny "killed himself," it's because Tyler Durden died when the main character of Fight Club "kills himself" (in this universe, Sunny has seen Fight Club for some reason).

Hello Again! I just saw your message today and decided to replay the game also I've made a guide for the game with all the endings.

Oh hell yeah, that is extremely cool! I want to see it! Have you posted it anywhere?

No, I haven't posted it anywhere I don't know how to post it online and don't know if you'd like it to be posted under the comment section. It's just a Google Doc for now.

You could just post it here, if someone's digging through the comments and reading this conversation thread I'm guessing they don't mind spoilers. No pressure, of course! You can also just not post it, I'm not your boss.

Oh wow, that is exceptional work! I wish there was a way I could favourite or pin that reply or something, but since there's not, all I can do is say that you rock.

I was just scrolling through the site a few moments ago and stumbled across this game, being the diehard Omori fan I am, I almost instantly downloaded it, and I do not regret a second of it!

The humor was genuinely funny, unlike a bunch of other games that I've been seeing recently, and the idea of Sunny and Basil working as detectives for Hero of all people was so creative on your end and I'm now in love with itt

Aubrey and Kel working at a bar together honestly is such a vibe, especially with the way you draw Aubrey's hair a little duller than it is in canon, which I think really fits her. Actually, everything about her design is awesome-

Also, the way you draw Hero with of his Pursuit AU design with your art style is so pretty!! It was a really cool detail to add in, and you missed no opportunities when it came to references with this :D

Anyway, I hope you continue to make silly games like this because I'll definitely be sure to come back to your profile and check them out if you do. This game was a really fun experience that's criminally underrated. You're seriously a very talented creator with a bunch of potential! Thanks for making this!

Oh wow, thank you for the compliments! I am actually sorta working on a "sequel" already, with more focus on Kel because he's fun to write.

Buuut I do have to point out that I can't take much credit for the character art! I'm glad I apparently managed to make it look "natural," through editing of colours, character sizes, giving Kel stubble, adding the cigarettes to hands, etc., but as the About section and credits point out, the actual art is by Iwose! Who is a very good artist and allows his Picrews to be used for more or less anything. So I can only in the vaguest terms maybe take some credit for some of the designs. I encourage you to play around with his Picrews, though, there's a lot of fun stuff there I didn't have a chance to use.

I see, my apologies for not reading the credits before! What I said about the game still stands though, and you've earned yourself a follow from me regardless! A Kel-centric game set in this AU seems very interesting too, and when it comes out I'll be sure to playthrough it ^^

Thank you for the picrew links btw! I'll try them out as well!

(+1)

No problem at all, I always skip the credits of everything too. And thanks again! Kel will fulfill his wish of becoming a drummer in a band, but then... (Someone gets killed, obviously, that's how detective stories go.)

I’m kind of late (maybe? Idk) but I wanna rant about how much I love this game!

I actually found the game from an edit I saw, so I played pretty much completely blind! AND OH BOY I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!

I love sunny and basil in this. their just so silly. the Sillys have my entire heart AAAAAAA-

I was not expecting the pursuit hero reference or the basil drawing or literally any of the sexual (ish?) jokes but it was kind of a pleasant surprise! Basils line after he sees the drawing is extremely silly, love it!

The fourth wall breaks are also goofy!

Overall i just really like this game! The jokes are funny and the plots nice and well done! 10/10 would recommend!

Aww, thanks! Getting nice comments always makes my day. And, as usual, it turns out that the things I had the most fun writing turns out to be the parts people like the most!

Since you mentioned the sexual jokes, though, I should point out that I sort of technically made another game before this, specifically Feral Basil: The Text Adventure. Way shorter, and without visuals, but it's basically one big sexual joke that got out of hand. The premise is that, uuh, Basil is some sort of cryptid with a very specific goal in mind.

You move closer to the window, trying to make out what it is that's moving out in the backyard. It seems to be ... Basil? He's trudging along on all fours and sniffing the ground, occasionally raising his head and sniffing the air.

HELP BASIL ABANDONED ME 😭

Yeeeah, that is by far the saddest ending, and I for some reason decided to have it be, like, the first ending you can get. But, as the ending note says, the rest of the VN is less sad!

Sunny’s drawing of Basil HELP ..

alssooooo, where is the art of Basil from? Js curious :3

Hehe, you are not the first person to ask! The artist is one HornyDaddy, who, to give full warning, does draw some very questionable non-con NSFW stuff at times. The specific drawing is here (NSFW), but it's worth noting that I edited the dress on for the VN, in the original one Basil is quite a lot less dressed.

ty!!!

WOAH. This is the first game I’ve played on itch.io, and lemme say, THIS IS AMAZING?? I hope this can grow a fandom, because the plot twists caught me off guard, the humor made it better to, plus the references, like the one to pursuit hero which I didn’t expect that lol, in general this is overall a 1000/10

Aww, thanks! Seeing people enjoying the things I've made is a nice mood booster. And for the record, by this point about 750 people have played Detective Sunny, which is way more than I ever expected, so that's enough of a fandom for me!

(1 edit)

Best OMORI related thing I have played, the humor is incredible. Not sure if I got all the endings, but I think it's the case.

I don't own a credit card, and I'm not sure where to send fanarts of this masterpiece-

Thank you very much! I consider it an even bigger compliment that you apparently made your account just to post that comment!

I by no means expect to make any money off of this, but I do very much appreciate fanart! I'm not sure how well it works, but it is possible to attach images directly to itch.io comments. Image attached to illustrate that it's doable, and where the button is.

(+3)

Thank you !

(not very satisfied by this drawing...)

(+1)

Whoaaah! You should be very satisfied with that drawing, that's great! Personal highlights: Kel and Aubrey being cute together, Sunny's face in the top right, and feral Basil. And, of course, Tony, who's lying on the couch next to me but sadly doesn't seem to care that someone drew him.

(1 edit) (+2)

I posted this to omog, but I wanted to make sure you saw it. I drew some Detective Sunny fanart, hope thats okay!

As you now know, I did see it, and it rocks! I'm not seeing the image in your comment, so let's see if it shows up in mine.

Amazing work, i had a hard time playing it because my computer kept closing a lot, but apart from that i really enjoyed it i would love too see moree

(+1)

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I have no clue what about it could have made your computer crash, so hopefully that was just a coincidence. In any case, there will be more, probably! I had fun making this one, so I think I am going to make a chapter 2 at some point.

the game looks amazing, there would not be a French version by chance?

Thank you very much! And no, I'm afraid there are no versions of this VN in any other language. I only speak Norwegian and English, and I really don't have the money to hire translators.

(1 edit)

this game is rly good, i didnt expect any omori fangames at all but then i was hit by this amazing thing. welp now my expectations for other fan games is wrecked

Hehe, don't set the bar too high on my account! This is a silly joke game, after all. I was about to say that there are at least 28 other Omori fan games on itch.io alone, after a quick search, but the first hit was a boob physics simulator (?), so, maybe not.

Ironic detachment aside, I'm very glad you liked it!

i can't believe i'm the first comment... but holy shit this game is AWESOME. the music, the references (pursuit hero my detested), everything was amazing. i have ONE dislike: the gui (specifically the textboxes) i think it's a little strange looking... but other than that i loved the game! can't wait to see more <3

Aww, thank you! And tbh the textboxes look completely normal to me, but that is presumably because I've stared at them for ages while editing and playtesting
